August 31, 2010 Tuesday

1ST SUMMATIVE WILL BE THIS THURSDAY. STUDENTS SHOULD BE STUDYING WHAT THE MAHELE IS, WHY IT CAME ABOUT ANS THE POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC EFFECTS.


In class today:


1. Reviewed logs for completeness.


2. Students given a formative to explain why the Mahele started and the social, political, and economic effects of the Mahele on maka'ainana. No notes were given to evaluate whether students understood the causes for the Mahele and the effects.


3. Reviewed with students the formative (multi-flow map). Discussed in class the causes of Mahele (left side of Multi-flow map).




Homework:


1. Study what the Mahele is and revise flow map of Mahele (Mr. Wong's class).

2. Review Mahele and Effects. Detective logs (Mr. Oyama's class)

August 30, 2010 Monday

In class today:


1. Collected Flow Map Formative of Mahele


2. Read last letter of distress from maka'ainana, discussed how land was no longer shared in many parts of Hawaii, private lands with many owners.


3. Seat and Desk claims were decided reviewed, those who followed the directions were able to claim their seat/desk, those who did not include all the necessary information/drawings lost the use of their seat and/or desk. Students will have an opportunity to reclaim seat/desks starting on Thursday for Mr. Oyama's, Mr. Wong's classes can redo their and turn in tomorrow.




Homework:


Finish the log book for last letter of distress (see Friday, August 27th for letters).

Aloha Friday!  Students were sent home a letter about next year's multi-track schedule.  We are switching to 4 tracks so please ask your child for the letter.

In Class:

*Students read Letters in Distress today in class.  Our purpose was: What effects occurred as a result of the Mahele.
*Went over the effects of the 3 letters. (Students are to write in their Detective Logs tonight for the exhibits)
*Gave class time for seat and desk claim.

Homework:

1. Formative Memo due Monday: Flow Map Map explaining the Mahele
2. Detective Log for the letters of distress Exhibits F, G, and H

In class today:
1. Students received formative Flow Map - Mahele. They are to look through their evidence documents and find six important events/dates and give supporting details that help explain what the Mahele is.

2. Worked on Seat/Desk claims.

Homework:
1. Due tomorrow, Friday - their Seat/Desk claims.
2. Due Monday, August 30th, Mahele Flow Maps

Mr. Wong's classes received grade updates for Term 2 in their planner.

*Detective Logs introduced today (students worked in groups to fill out first page).  Students will need to look at exhibits and fill out chart.  If a reading doesn't apply, please mark "n/a" or not applicable.

Welcome back to Term 2!  Kupono 7 is extending its fundraising of entertainment books and Panda Express coupons so please ask your child for the letter and flyer that was sent home.

In Class: 

*Students given manila folder to put their HSI (Historical Scenes Investigation) project in.  
Also included is the Term 2 Mahele Unit Overview for the first three weeks of the term, Oni vs. Meek court reading and The Mahele Reading #1.
*Students were introduced to Problem Solving Project of Oni vs. Meek.  During the next couple of weeks, students will need to look through the various exhibits to cracking the case.
*Read The Mahele Reading #2 in class: 2 purposes: 1. Why was land important to foreigners and 2. What did Hawaiians think about land?

Homework:

1. Decorate manila folder and put first and last name on it
2. Read Oni vs. Meek court case (We will be role playing in class on Monday)
3. Read The Mahele Reading #1 and take notes (remember what the 2 purposes are)
4. Quiz on the Mahele Reading #1

Term 1 has finally ended!

Mr. Oyama and Mr. Wong's homework for intersession has changed.  Sorry, but the new teenbiz articles are:

Again, sorry for the wrong titles. These articles will be sent via teenbiz so check your emails.  Just read the articles and complete the multiple choice.  This will be due on the last day of the intersession.
