*Continued Pacific Passport Activity

3. Choose 2-3 characteristics and explain its importance to the people living there. Basically, why are they important?

1. Study for school summative tomorrow (use 3 questions above to help you). Use the American Samoa example to study and prep for tomorrow. Also, please click on the following to review: physical and human characteristics and why population distribution is unven

*Collected summative project (Pacific Island Brochure)
*Students self-evaluated themselves in Mr. Wong and Mr. Oyama's class by looking at the requirements and rubric (Mr. Oyama's also did a peer evaluation)
*Students stared a Pacific Island Passport where they looked at other brochures and logged down information about the physical and human characteristics (continue tomorrow)

Homework:

1. Study for school summative for Thursday
Need to know: 1. What are physical and human characteristics and 2. Why is population distribution uneven?
2. Advanced demonstrations will be next Monday

*Checked for completion of island map (2x) and resources
*Explained to class that directions for brochure and template expectation on blog tonight (posted in class as well)

2. Look at blog tonight for template of how brochure should look like and directions for making brochure if you are unsure

Mr. Wong's class:

1. Complete 2 maps by tonight (human and physical)
2. Front page of resource guide due tomorrow
3. 2 resources due by tomorrow (internet)

(Note: Mr. Wong was extremely disappointed in the lack of effort from students today about not bringing their resources to class today. Again, time is given to you in class to research, so please meet Mr. Wong halfway since some resources are provided in class as well. You should be self-directed and listen carefully to the expectations set forth in class.)

In class today:

1. Passed out take home summative project - Island Brochure
Students were randomly assigned a Pacific Island.

2. Students had time in class to start their research using the Guided Notes Handout

3. Format for the Island Brochure using either columns or tables and how to insert pictures into the brochure is here Brochure Template. This template will be shared tomorrow with all students. If students have Microsoft Publisher, they may use with a tri-fold format.

Homework:

1. Students should continue research via the internet - information to fill in their Guided Notes and start downloading pictures that they will use later in their brochure. They should copy these pictures and put them onto a word document.

2. Create your 2 maps on 1/3 size sheet of paper (this will be put into your brochure later).

*Returned imaginary islands (revise if you have a 'U') - red ink
*Went over things that were wrong with the assignment (basically details to tree map and explanation of why cities are where they are located)

Homework:

1. Study for formative tonight. (a. know difference between physical and human characteristics and b. review handout about why population distribution is uneven) - 2nd handout will discuss reasons why populations were settled in a certain area in the past such as having resources for survival such as water (lake or river) or food resources (type of soil)
2. Revise imaginary island or reflection if you received a 'U." (Reflections given back from Mr. Oyama's today)
3. Bring red pen tomorrow (Mr. Wong's only)

*Worked on introduction to Pacific Islands: Students given worksheets (Exploring the Pacific Islands and Micro, Mela, Poly Map) to complete by the end of the class period. Used the Pacific Island Atlas as a reference to help them answer the questions

Homework:

1. No homework, but students should be reviewing the concepts we went over this week: human and physical characteristics and why cities are located where they are. (see previous days handouts)
2. Registration forms due Monday and AR Letters due Monday
3. Take home binders and place all handouts in appropriate sections (Mr. Wong's class only)

Notes:

Fun Night Letter given out yesterday and today in Core 1 classes. Students must meet 100% of their AR goals and not get referred this term to be invited.

Kupono Dance for Heart Service Learning kicked off yesterday with a presentation by Ms. Raimo from the American Heart Association. Our Dance a Thon will be on February 3, 2011. Donation forms and letters will be handed out tomorrow during social studies class.
