In Class:

*Check social studies binder (Disappointed in the number of students who didn't organize binder and read the instructions)
*Went over Advanced part of take home summative (only students with proficient grades had the option of going for the Advanced) - Make a difference booklet
*Explained to students that organizer is due the first day back for approval. If students want to start early, they can email me for approval.
*GOOD JOB! - Went over yesterday's summative and congratulated everyone. Many advanced and proficient students. Students exceeded my expectations!

Homework:

1. Only for students going for the Advanced "Make a Difference" booklet (ONLY THE ORGANIZER WHICH IS DUE 1ST DAY BACK FROM BREAK.) - IF STUDENTS WANT TO START EARLY, PLEASE EMAIL ME YOUR ORGANIZER INFORMATION TO GET MY APPROVAL.

*Checked status of students and gave feedback on take home project. Students need to correct the following:

a. make sure they follow the steps
b. make sure their details are similar and not different and it supports the main idea

*Gave time in class to work on visual part

In Class:

*Picture Taking
*Went over quiz with students
*Explained to students that they need to do the written part of their take home project tonight. (See steps 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7)
*Went over a process to help students to the main ideas and details section:
a. List down in detail the things Kam I did after unification (e.g. rebuild fishponds, appoint a governor for each island)
b. Group details together using symbols (e.g. Stars, Pluses, etc.)
c. Look at all the Stars and decide what Kam I did that was important. This would be the main idea and the symbols (from the list) would be the details or dashes.
d. Showed example of pop up book page to students.
e. Told students to leave room between title and name of person. (see example)

Homework:

1. Start working on take home formative: Steps 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7) - TYPED OUT!
If your printer is not working, please email your assignment thru Teenbiz and bring a note from parent saying printer is not working.

*Quiz on yesterday's homework reading: Kamehameha I Effects After Unification
*Went over Teenbiz article about Kamehameha. (Students will need to print out the article and place in their Tab 4 section of their social studies binder. If your printer is broken, please write a note indicating so. Students were asked from Monday.)
*Went over Formative Take Home Project: Making a Difference in History: Past and Present (Part 1)

Homework:

1. Review take home project directions and come to questions tomorrow if you have any.

*Explained problem with Teenbiz. Students given extended time until tonight. User names and passwords given to students today in class.
*Passed out reading: Kamehameha I Effects After Unification. Purpose of reading is to find out the major effects or changes that Kamehameha did after he unified the islands.
*Explained optional readings will be on the blog tonight for those that want more details and information.

Homework:

1. Read Kamehameha I Effects After Unification. Study for quiz on Wednesday. Test will be on how well the students know what effects Kamehameha had on the islands. (Additional Readings on blog about Kamehameha effects - optional)
2. Complete Teenbiz article by tonight if you did not yet.

*Collected Lex Brodie Thank You Very Much Letter.
*Passed out "What is Plagiarism" handout with students and went over with them in class.
*Explained to students the homework on Teenbiz. Everyone should read the article and take the multiple choice quiz by 10:00 pm tonight. I will check students who took the test and count it as a formative quiz. Students will also need to print out only the article to discuss tomorrow. Please check email tonight!

Homework:

1. Teenbiz article: New Coin Remembers Hawaii's History. Answer the multiple choice questions. Article must be read by 10:00 pm. Will be graded. Print out article.
2. Picture taking on Thursday thru social studies class.

In Class:

1. Reviewed Economic, Political and Social notes in class. Specifically the subsistence economy, class systems and education and religion.
2. Read "Kapu System" to students in class. The purpose was to find out WHAT IS THE KAPU SYSTEM?
3. Students highlighted additional information and we added onto our tree map under POLITICAL.
4. Went over the 1st benchmark with students (Describe the effects of unification).
5. Read the Old Man and the Starfish story to students and asked them if 1 person can really make a difference? Discussion followed
6. Introduced the Lex Brodie "Thank You" Letter. Explained directions: 1. Write a letter thanking someone special in their lives. 2. No more than 300 words.

Homework:

1. Lex Brodie Thank You Letter due Monday (300 words maximum)

1. Reviewed the 3 concepts of social, political and economic with students.
2. Reviewed Hawaii's subsistence economy.
3. Read in class "Class System". Purpose of reading was to find out WHAT WERE THE MAJOR CLASSES IN THE HAWAIIAN SYSTEM.
4. Took notes on our tree map under POLITICAL (see yesterday's blog).
5. We also added on info. for SOCIAL (customs/traditions, religion and education).

In Class:

1. Went over the definitions of social, political and economic and gave visual examples of each. (Powerpoint presentation)
2. Started on tree map of the Hawaiian culture by reading "Early Hawaiian Subsistence Economy." Placed information on the tree map under ECONOMICS.
Purpose of reading was to find out "what type of economic system did the Hawaiians use?"

Homework:

1. Finish up your level set for Teenbiz by Friday. (Need to go before school, recess or afterschool).

1. Collected social studies syllabus (parent signatures)
2. Went over reading strategy: Reading for a purpose. Used reading entitled "House" where students were asked to read the article as if they were a thief and highlight important info. that a thief would find important. I later shifted the purpose to a realtor's role. The main focus was to show students that any readings they have will have a purpose and they need to focus on the purpose questions.
3. Went over Quarter 1 Unit Overview

Welcome to Red 7 - Team Kaizen!

This is the start of a new year and it was great seeing all of our new students today. This blog will help to support students and parents, so please check everyday of what was covered and any homework that was given for the day. You can also find any readings or homework worksheets or projects that were given out in class and print them from home as well.
